BRING YOUR OWN Water Bottle.
IT'S HOW MANLY SIPS.
Water is essential for life. And in Sydney we’re lucky that clean, filtered water flows virtually for free on tap. So why do 70% of Australians buy bottled water and what is happening to the 1.3 billion bottles in our waste stream each year?
You might be shocked to find out that Sydney Water collect 1 million water bottles from their gross pollutants traps in our waterways each year. Less than 40% of water bottles are actually recycled or down-cycled and the vast majority end up in landfill where they take 1000 years to break down.
But the biggest shock of all is that recent tests found microplastic particles in 93% of bottled water. In addition, the price of bottled water is approximately 1000 times more than tap water but its clearly not an inferior product. The manufacture & transport of plastic bottles is also energy and resource intensive, creating around 60,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases and using 460,000 barrels of oil in Australia each year.
Choosing to drink tap water and bring your own bottle can make a big difference to your health, your wallet and our pristine beaches.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
1. BYO Water Bottle
Reusable water bottles are one of the best ways to eliminate the single-use plastics from your life. Its a good idea to use a food grade stainless steel bottle to avoid plastic chemicals leaching into your water. They’re stylish, easy to wash and you will save so much money by making this small change.
2. ASK FOR TAP WATER AT YOUR LOCAL CAFE OR RESTAURANT
If you’ve forgotten to bring your own bottle you can still make a difference by not buying bottled water. Simply ask for a glass of water. You’ll also be reducing your ecological footprint by drinking tap water.
3. PUT YOUR LOCAL CAFE ON THE MAP
Restaurants & Cafes that are proudly serving tap water can register at Our Sydney Our Water.
